About the photographer: Zakia Fatima

A student of International Center for Photography, Zakia, has been a photographer for over 16 years during which time she has done pioneering work in advertising, Indian cinema and fashion. She has also worked extensively with some of India's leading lifestyle magazines like Harper's Bazaar, Femina, FHM and Cosmopolitan.

Driven by the constant urge to take creative breaks every three or four years, in the summer of 2006, Zakia enrolled herself at International Center of Photography, New York.

At the time, India was a big story and Zakia was asked about the many facets of its achievements. Suddenly it was a nation of software- and information-technology wizards and a newly confident player on the world stage. The men who were household names for Zakia and other Indians ignited a spark of inspiration, and a germ of an idea began to take root in her mind. Why not photograph some of these men so that she could share their achievements both with Indians and the rest of the world while also paying tribute to them?

Her book Men Who Inspire India is the culmination of three years of concerted effort in that direction.

About The Akshaya Patra Foundation
This foundation provides unlimited mid-day meals in primary schools. This has helped half the school drop-out rate, as often this is the only meal the child gets in the day.

The loss of her mother and the quest for perfection took photographer Zakia Fatima around the world several times in search of men who inspire India.

In this marvellous book, we see larger-than-life public figures in their personal spaces: unusual glimpses of industrialists Mukesh Ambani and Lakshmi Mittal; technology czars NR Narayana Murthy and Dr. Gururaj Deshpande; musician-maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar, music composer and director AR Rahman; spiritual gurus Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and Deepak Chopra; renowned actors Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar; sports aces Sachin Tendulkar, Mahesh Bhupathi, Leander Paes and Abhinav Bindra; thinkers Amartya Sen and Fareed Zakaria; writer Vikram Seth; and renowned journalists Dr Prannoy Roy and Rajdeep Sardesai. The list also includes: Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, Ashok Amritraj, Dilip Chhabria, Gulzar, Harsha Bhogle, Hrithik Roshan, Jeev Milkha Singh, Kapil Dev, Kamal Haasan, M. F. Hussain, Narain Karthikeyan, Dr. R.K. Pachauri, Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Omar Abdullah, P. Chidambaram, Ronnie Screwvala, S. H.
